Introduction

Welcome to the second edition of the Vault Guide to Green Programs! This year there are several changes to the survey as well as many new participants. While our mission remained the same, that is, to present accurate information about how companies are incorporating environmental concerns into their business and career practices, our questions were more deliberate this year. They also evinced more descriptive answers and concrete numbers on whether green is really green.

With the participating companies asked questions ranging from green programs discussed at the time of recruitment to what part their CSR policy played in promotions and bonuses, the guide is especially relevant to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as entry-level and mid-career employees, who are considering environmentally friendly companies. At the same time, the guide can also be used by companies for research purposes, benchmarking their current programs or even motivation to create such programs.

The companies surveyed in this guide have a strong desire to impact the environment by implementing better practices into their corporate culture. From recycling to onsite educational workshops to specifically targeting building  rojects/infrastructure to streamlining the retail process, it’s clear that the companies featured in the following pages are serious about green programs and careers in a business setting.

By embracing environmentally friendly policies, companies both save on energy use, enhance their corporate reputation and attract forward-thinking employees – all of which impact the bottom line of the company. The companies represented in this guide are invested in both the bottom line of their company and the sustainability of the environment.

Some of these companies provide opportunities for candidates interested in a green career and some provide opportunities to work on projects that have bearing on global warming issues, but all of the companies offer programs that reflect a move toward eco-friendly companies.

A quite note on the way we decided to present the profiles this year: Law firms constitute the largest participant group this year and to recognize that, we have presented all their surveys together. This is in no way a ranking but an attempt to allow a direct comparison of their efforts in the sustainability area for our readers as well as to show their collective presence as one of the more environmentally conscious industry.
