What Is GFSI And Why Are Major U.S. Retailers Making Food Suppliers Comply With It's Standards?Learn how valuable the Global Food Safety Initiative is to the food supply chain.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc announced officially (see inside download for link to the press release) that suppliers of its private label and certain other food items, like produce, meat and fish, must comply with Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards.

DNV is one of the few certification bodies that can certify processes along the entire food production chain, from the primary sector to processing and packaging, from distribution to retail.

NDV Industry also provides a one-stop-shopping concept by offering a range of single and combined certification services, enhancing the effectiveness of the process. DNV is the only company that can certify to all approved GFSI recognized standards (IFS, SQF, BRC and Dutch HACCP).

What is GFSI?
In May 2000, a group of international retailer CEOs identified the need to enhance food safety, ensure consumer protection and to strengthen consumer confidence. They proposed a program which would set requirements for food safety schemes and improve cost efficiency throughout the food supply chain.

Following their lead, CIES – The Food Business Forum developed its food safety programs to help food safety stakeholders work together towards:
• Decreasing food safety scares and risks
• Providing better quality products for consumers
• Enhancing transparency between all the links in the food chain
