By Charlotte Perkins Gilman, University of California Press, 1998 Women And Economics is a book by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (also known for The Yellow Wallpaper), published in 1898. Not only was it a theoretical analysis of a male-centred culture, it was also a vivid call for women's economic independence. Whilst not endorsing the views of the suffrage movement (believing that it was not crucial to women's independence), she argued that women would truly be free once they had the means to be support themselves.
This masterpiece of social science by the author of "The Yellow Wallpaper" explores the evolution of women’s economic reliance on men. Gilman discusses the limitations in intellectual and emotional development inherent in this convention and its injurious effects on both sexes. A classic of feminist theory, this work still resonates a century after its initial publication.
