We’ve come a long way in our understanding of diseases, their causes and how to treat them, but there’s still much to be learned. Research provides us with a wealth of information, but you may often find yourself asking, “What does it mean for me?”

There are many types of research: studies that examine the best way to prevent disease, observational studies and those that investigate the natural history and pattern of a disease. Clinical trials are studies that are performed in phases to determine whether a drug or medical device is safe and effective compared with a placebo. Periodically, data from these studies are collected and reviewed for safety and efficacy by an independent board (called the Data Safety Monitoring Board) to determine whether the study should continue.

Research remains the most important reason physicians change the way they diagnose and treat medical conditions but, often, the results of these studies can be confusing. That’s why it’s important to find health care information that’s up to date and reliable.
