it's no fairy tale: People do die of broken hearts. Cardiovascular disease—that is, disease of the heart or blood vessels—is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. It kills more people than cancer, more than accidents, far more than AIDS.

That's the bad news. The good news is that death rates from cardiovascular disease declined more than 22 percent from 1993 to 2003. Thanks to new medications and surgical techniques, stepped-up prevention and increased awareness, far more people are living with cardiovascular disease than dying from it. They're learning to eat, exercise, use medications, and monitor their hearts differently than they did before. Here are three of their stories—from the heart....
