Your Pet is a lively, high-quality, full-colour glossy publication that provides a superior advertising vehicle for targeting pet owners. Its contemporary design and convenient size means the magazine is well displayed on counters and in waiting areas (off the ground) and easily accessed and stored by pet lovers.

Additionally, Your Pet's quality content and imagery ensures readers keep the magazine for ongoing reference, giving advertisers maximum exposure well past the three month shelf life.

From the Editor:

One day when we were out and about with Miffy, we bumped into some people from Melbourne. They were holidaying in Queensland and desperately missing their West Highland White Terrier, so wanted to chat with us. During the conversation the fellow advised us: “She won’t come to you when you call her until she’s about four, she’s a Westie.” At the time Miffy was only a puppy and we didn’t catch on to what he was talking about.

Not long after that we took Miffy to puppy school and discovered that he was referring to the recall command — not something Terriers take to easily but will with time and persistence.

This command is extremely important to teach your dog no matter its breed or age. According to Steve Austin, who explains this training lesson in ‘the dog house’ section of this edition, it’s one of the most common training requests by dog owners. I urge you to read Steve’s advice and persevere with the training, as when the command clicks in (which has — finally — for Miffy) the rewards are huge!

Speaking of rewards, have you ever dreamt about what it would be like to get up close and personal with a lion cub or three? This has been a dream for Rosie Overfield that was fulfilled when she spent four weeks caring for lion cubs and other animals at a lion park in South Africa. To read about her African adventure see ‘cat chat’.

While the carers of the big cats Rosie encountered have limited resources and control over their charges’ environment, there is no reason why our domestic cats can’t be given the best care that comes with responsible pet ownership. In the ‘ask our vet’ section Dr Michelle Coles talks about feline diseases and how they can be managed, with a reminder that the environment in which our cats live contributes signifi cantly to their health and wellbeing.

And for pet lovers who prefer fins to fur, Dr Richmond Loh profiles the Discus fish and what’s involved in caring for them. For a complete overview and some stunning images, check out ‘in the tank’.

Finally, have you noticed that our print run is increasing? We are growing rapidly and like to keep you posted by listing this achievement on our cover. We now distribute 60,000 copies across Australia with ongoing growth planned for the year. In fact, we are Australia’s highest-circulating pet magazine and this is thanks to the support of our many advertisers, readers and distributors. If you would like to be part of our growth please contact us.

Enjoy your pet  — Janice Holland
